Andrew Lewis-Smith

I am a BABCP accredited Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and a UKCP registered Family & Systemic Psychotherapist. As an undergraduate I studied Geography but following a rather circuitous life path, an interest in how people overcame the difficulties which arose in life, led me to train as a Family Psychotherapist gaining an MSc in 2000. I began working in a specialist NHS child & adolescent mental health clinic in London 1999. In 2003, following a family move to the southwest, I took a post in an NHS clinic as a Family Psychotherapist working with children, young people and their families. I subsequently trained in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) at the Maudsley hospital qualifying in 2005.As a dual trained Psychotherapist I have been fortunate to assess and treat a broad range of psychological and emotional difficulties faced by young people and adults. In my clinical work with adults I specialise in:Eating problems (more formally and diagnostically termed as eating disorders) including Anorexia and Bulimia and issues often related to food related difficulties such as low self-esteem, unhelpful styles of perfectionism and body dissatisfaction.Anxiety, which comes in many forms such as panic, social anxiety and worry. I work with tried and tested CBT models working with people to understand ways in which both thoughts and behaviours can maintain anxiety, using this to develop new understanding and more helpful behaviours. The initial assessment takes a holistic approach looking broadly at lifestyle factors which may impact negatively on anxiety and considering more helpful alternatives. The use of mindfulness and self-compassion practice in aiding recovery from and the day-to-day reality of mental or physical ill health.Low self-esteemWork place stressMy child & adolescent work includes:

Eating problems including Anorexia and Bulimia and issues often related to food related difficulties such as low self-esteem, unhelpful styles of perfectionism and body dissatisfaction

Obsessive compulsive disorder and body dysmorphic disorder

Family difficulties often related to communication issues or intergenerational factors.

I enjoy helping adults, young people and families’ overcome challenges that they face in life and I am always impressed by the courage and creativity that they show in solving their problems. Throughout my work my aim is to highlight the person’s and/or families’ strengths, resourcefulness and their unique skills and characteristics. This not only helps with the immediate problem with which they are struggling with but also wider aspects of their life. I strive to empower the people that I work with and to assist them in making the most of their lives.

Beyond my clinical work I have 3 children so I have some experience of the ups and downs of being a parent and the difficulties, which children can face at times. I am a keen cyclist, practice meditation and yoga regularly. I also enjoy reading, gardening and I am a passionate bread maker.

For adults (18yrs +)My fees are currently £100 per session.
